Table Re-do

Oh, boy!  I am SO excited to unveil my latest project!  I am just so excited that it is DONE and that it came out so nicely.
Here is my old kitchen table.  In all its orange oak-ey glory:

Yes, it's a mess.  That was the topic of the past post that I pulled this picture from, because I forgot to take a more recent picture of it cleared off.  Anyway, you can still clearly get the idea of what it looked like.  It was not only ugly in color, but it was showing definite wear and had paint and permanent marker on the top (which you CAN'T see in this picture, but it's there.)
Here is a chair that shows what some of the wear was like:

(yes, it's taken after I started painting and with my phone so it's not a very good shot, but you get the idea.)

I saw this tutorial on one of my favorite blogs, Clover Lane.  She did a similar transformation on her dining furniture, so I gave it a go.  I pretty much did exactly what she said to on her awesome tut, but I will give a summary of what I did here.  I got all my supplies from Home Depot.
Supplies:  very good paint brush (CRUCIAL!), tack cloth, mineral spirits, sanding block and sandpaper in varying grits, satin Minwax fast-drying polyurethane, and black satin oil enamel - YES, oil.  DON'T let the guy at Home Depot try to talk you into latex instead.  It was very easy to use and I think it will be more durable to boot.  It is very smelly, but I did my painting outside so it was fine.

Tips:  get a solid sanding block, NOT a sanding sponge.  When you are distressing the edges at the end, a sponge will scratch up the paint around the edges. A quart was all I needed of paint and a pint of poly.  I have some leftover, and I painted a big table and 6 chairs.  I did two coats of paint on the table top, and one on everywhere else.  I did two coats of poly on the table top, and one coat on the chair seats and backs.  No poly anywhere else.  I am very interested to see how all this holds up...  My table and chairs get HEAVY use.

I sanded the table top lightly, but not anything else because it was already so worn.  I also did not use primer, because I wanted to distress the edges and wanted the wood color to peek through (not white primer).  Use the tack cloth to wipe the table after sanding.  I also gave it a cleaning with some TSP, but don't know if this was necessary.  Then, I painted everything with one coat.  (those chairs were a PAIN to paint!  but SOOOO worth it)  Let that dry, then touched up wherever I missed and did another coat on table top.  Let that dry and then distressed the edges.  Use the tack cloth to clean the dust off before using the polyurethane.  After the two coats of poly were dry, I let it sit outside for a couple days to really set before using it.  Brought it in, and I love it!  We all do.  It is so beautiful now!

I had a hard time getting a good picture, but hopefully you get the idea.  A new dining set for about 50 bucks!!!  Lovely.

Our Christmas

It begins with a sleepover.  All the kids sleep in one bedroom together.  Well, except the bambino.  He kept to his crib.  The rule is, when they wake up they have to come straight into mom and dad's room, and it can't be before 7 am.  This is the first year they have actually come in at 7.  They usually sleep in until at least 8.

Here is a shot of our tree on Christmas Eve.  Naunee came over and we watched "The Nativity Story" while we did last minute wrapping.

When we are all up, the kids line up in the hall youngest to oldest.  We usually have them come one at a time into the living room, but since this house is set up a little differently than our last, they all came in together.  They take a look at the tree and then commence the stocking hunt.

At our house, Santa hides the full stockings.  Stockings are our favorite part!!  Even Tailgunner LOVED his stocking.  He didn't want anything else for a while.  :)

Everyone was happy with their treasures.  It was a GREAT day!!  We spent the day playing and enjoying each other.  My mom slept over and we made our traditional Christmas Day foods, which are a bunch of finger foods.  Hawaiian meatballs, bbq smokies, pinwheels, finger sandwiches, pickles, chips and dips, etc.

DH got some sparklers in his stocking, so guess what we did once it became dark?  :)

Too funny, Grandpa!

OK, so I am behind in what is going on around here.  Basically, we moved, are still in a bit of chaos, had to decorate for Christmas anyway, etc...  Mom, Dad and Grandpa (on DH's side) stayed with us last night on their way up to Utah.

So, Grandpa was getting all dressed and ready this morning.  You know, adhering dentures, combing hair, smelling good.  I was standing right by him and saw him pull something out of his pocket, and rub something blue all over his lips.  It was in a tube like chapstick, which apparently he thought it was.  My thoughts were going between "maybe the blue chapstick dries clear" and "that tube doesn't look right for a tube of chapstick" and "surely he wouldn't be rubbing glue all over his lips, right?".  After a split second of these thoughts in my head, I asked Grandpa to show me the tube he had.  Sure enough, it was a gel glue stick!!
I then had to try not to completely lose it laughing and tell him what he just did.  I said, trying not to laugh too much, "Um, Grandpa?  This is a glue stick, not a chapstick."  He looked at it and said, "Well, I'll be.  No wonder it doesn't taste so good."  Then Mom pipes up and said, "I have been wondering why his mouth was blue back home!  I kept asking him what he ate that was blue, and he said he didn't eat anything blue!  Now it makes sense..."
So, I don't know how long he has been using this glue stick on his lips, but I have a feeling I should have thrown it away so he doesn't use it again!  :)  We LOOOOOOVE Grandpa!!!  He is too fun.  Incidentally, Teeny Bopper and I laughed for about a half and hour straight tonite over this.  Family is the most happy thing on earth, I tell ya.

On the first day of Christmas...

My true friend (we are assuming, though they are anonymous at this time) gave to me...
a package of cocoa for the family.

Yes, we are being twelve days of Christmased!  I tell you, we canNOT have been welcomed any more warmly in our new neighborhood and ward.
One day while we were unloading a trailer full of stuff into the garage we were caroled to by two different families (who also brought cookies, oh yeah!).  Then when we got home to our other house a neighbor brought by a tin of delicious cookies.  We are so spoiled!
Another day last week we were unloading yet another load into the garage (let's hear it for the garage!), someone in our new ward brought by leftover dinner from the ward party!  Several friends and neighbors (from the old neighborhood) brought dinner the week of our move, which made life a BAJILLION times easier on us.  I must remember to take dinner to friends when they move.  That made such a huge difference to me not to have to cook or worry about feeding my family.
I can't forget to mention how much my mother and father in law helped with the packing.  And my sister in law Lisa.  They took so much of the burden from me when I was feeling overwhelmed and stuck.
Then, on our moving day, I just had to call a few friends and they came right over to help us move.  And when we got to the new house, there were about 8 more people waiting here to help us unload!!
Thank you, THANK you to everyone who came to our rescue this week.   I love my friends, neighbors, and family so much!! You are the best of the best!

Moving Day

I can't believe it...we're moving tomorrow!  Tonite is our last night in this house.  This house that I slept in as a baby and that my babies have slept in.  The last night in our neighborhood that we love so much.  Tomorrow we start building.  A new life, new friendships, a new home.  It's going to be a busy day.

Seussical

It's opening night!!!  Have I mentioned my daughter is the female lead???  OK, am I being too prideful about this?  My buttons are bursting right off though, I can't help it!  :)
