A productive day

I LOOOOOOVE days that we spend working together on cleaning our house or working outside. Yesterday we cleared out our flower beds in the backyard (which were previously totally over-run with aloe vera plants--don't worry, there's more out front.) and are getting them ready to plant some vegetables. I'm so excited! We are going to make some raised beds to plant more food, but haven't gotten to that yet. This blog has a GREAT tutorial on the subject. We also got a compost barrel from the city (they cost $5, which they add to your next utility bill and deliver to your house) and started to compost!! I know it will take a little while for that to become useful, but it feels so good to have done something towards our gardening goal.

Anyone have any suggestions on the garden or composting?

The only tip I have for composting is get worms!! And as for gardening, my mom has a pretty stellar green thumb and gave me some info she got from an AZ farmer in her ward about what to plant when in AZ. We will have to get together and chat!

COOL Sally! Good Luck with it. We tried a garden once and it wasn't very productive. We need to try again.

Thanks for mentioning my tutorial! The most important thing about gardening is to have good soil. It took a while to get the hang of composting. Everybody always makes it seem likes it so easy, but it's not for everyone. We finally learned to just let it me for a few months and now we're fortunate to have some good compost to use. So don't get discouraged if it doesn't work the way you expect - keep try!

Randy started work on getting a garden ready a couple of days ago. I just got a book from the library called square foot gardening that I've heard is really good and my mom bought a dvd all about gardening that she bought at some workshop on Saturday. You're welcome to borrow.
How do I go about getting one of those compost things? What did you decide to plant? I'm so clueless about this stuff! It's nice to know we're in it together! :)

To get a compost barrel, just call the solid waste dept. and tell them you want one. They were really nice. They deliver it on the day they pick up your recycle, so I called on Wed. and they delivered it on Thurs.! I would LOVE to share gardening info. I've looked through that book and last year my ward had an Enrichment about it. There is lots of info online, too.
